I loved this so much. I don't know why I took so long to read it. I didn't think I would relate so much to a queer mountain lion, but I did. They are me, and I am them 😂

I read this as part of a reading challenge with a prompt about a strange viewpoint. It's told in the first person from the viewpoint of a North American mountain lion / cougar, living in the Park under the foot of the Hollywood Sign. Stories like this always frustrate me because of the clumsy anthropomorphism. It's not emulating the mind or senses of an animal — it's just a story about people, and a fantasy about people watching and processing human life and culture as though from the outside.

This story doesn't have a lot of big-cat energy. It does have little slice-of life commentary about habitat destruction, poverty & homelessness, gay sex, loneliness and disconnection in the social media age, being connected to the living world.. and with some revenge fantasy mixed in, and a dream day-trip that I could NEVER see any cat of any sort enjoying ever.

It's fairly quiet and pretty short.. which is good because I would have become really grumpy about the choice of narrative style if I had to tolerate more of it. It's not as infuriating as A Cat's Tale.. but that would be a hard ask.

the life through a lion's eyes: childlike, tender, wild, ferocious. a touching story about a gay little lion who feels so much.

I read this book for a class, but I really enjoyed it. It wasn’t hard to get through, the only thing that slowed me down was the ending that I had known was coming. This made me sort of sad to read it but didn’t completely ruin the experience. I enjoyed the writing style and the POV of an animal is something I do a lot in my own writing so I enjoyed that as well. This novel was well researched, and did a good job of showing things how we think an animal would see them. It’s not something I would have picked up on my own, but it was really good.
