thank you to netgalley, the publisher and the author for this arc!

3 stars.

this book wasn't bad. it just wasn't for me. i feel like i would have enjoyed this much more when i was younger, because what irked me the most was the way it felt a little childish to me. that, and the repetitiveness of some elements in this book. like, yes, i get it. newham bad, newham evil. i am a coward. oh no my tiny little safe closet. (among other things, but i don't wanna list ALL of them.)

the dialogue also didn't feel all that natural to me, and the book tried a little too hard to be gore-y when it didn't have to be (and considering the rest of the book, felt a little misplaced). the plot was okay. nothing shocking, nothing that stood out. but again, that might just be me. maybe it's just a little under my age range, that's on me.

This was pretty enjoyable.

Was the writing so-so? Yes.

Does the author hit you over the head (repeatedly) with her morals and ideologies and the book's themes? Also yes.

Are you hammered with Ness's backstory until it loses all meaning? Yes, yes, and yes.

But the plot was fun. I'll be listening to book two.

It was a very interesting book. The world building is impressive, for 300 pages the world is detailed and interesting.
The characters are complex and have well developed personalities. The story is engaging with plot twists and mysteries that are gradually solved. In addition, the author uses the story to make very interesting reflections on human behaviour, social relationships and other more philosophical issues such as fear and anxiety/terror attacks.
I missed a bit of romance plot, but it is true that the story doesn't ask for it either, the characters develop a friendship and trust slowly through their own growth and development.
This book has been a very pleasant surprise, looking forward to reading the second one which I hope will be just as good.

Nightmares and monsters, cults and corruption! What more could a girl want.

City of Nightmares swept me away from the start and plopped me right in the middle of the most interesting world. The city has Gotham level corruption…but with monsters.

The world and the fantasy elements were so unique and the plot unraveled into something more big and sinister than I was expecting! I finished and immediately looked up if there would be another book and thank god there is! I already preordered it.

I loved how our main character grew som much and learned to trust herself and others. I loved her new friend and their sweet friendship and how much it grew over the course of the book. I hope their relationship blossoms into something more in the next book.

So so good!
