Another great installment, although I'm starting to worry Ms Hobb doesn't understand how rowing works...

After really enjoying the first book of this trilogy, the second instalment didn't disappoint. The plot keeps up a nice pace, there's some really imaginative world building relating to the origins of the liveships, but the best thing about this book is the character development. The main players are all well fleshed out, and I found Malta's storyline particularly satisfying. There are still a few of Hobb's descriptive tics that trip me up (the use of 'almost' and 'relentlessly'), and the change of gear in the last fifth of the book felt a little rushed, but these don't detract from it being a fun read, and a great setup for the final book of the trilogy.
