This was a wonderfully adventurous fairy tale, a little on the black side. Some magic, some faraway places, a quest, several little plot twists, and a semi-happy ending that leaves room for MORE. I started reading this a little slow and there was a moment in the first couple of chapters that it almost became a DNF. However, something changed and I found myself 50% through and desperately wanted to find out what happened. Great character development, an interesting plot, lots of Once upon a time. Would love to see a follow up.

Among the Beasts and Briars drew me in with the beautiful cover art and exciting summary. However, this book just wasn't for me. I am a huge YA reader, but this book read much more middlegrade/younger ya than my tastes allow. It's a great clean read for those who are maybe just entering the realm of magic and fantasy in books, but the characters and plot twists left something to be desired for myself, who is a more mature YA lover.
Let me reiterate, that there is nothing inherently wrong with this book. I just could not connect in any meaningful way to the characters and plot. I was not its target audience. You might be. I'd give it a try, you might find that you adore it. But it just was not my cup of tea. and that's okay!
I'm rounding down to two stars for the sake of the rating system on this site, but ultimately would give this read a 2.5 stars.

Solid story, some beautiful prose. Predictable and a little obvious “twists,” and some very repetitive descriptions but a worthwhile read.

“There were no stories of foxes and gardeners with happy endings.”

I’m going to be cringe and quote myself, “She had a crush on the fox from Zootopia, a pen and a dream.” But, didn’t we all???

shadow and bone aesthetic

I need more sleeping beauty retellings in my life. Por favor y gracias. I don’t know why didn’t any of you told me to read this sooner, honestly, shame on you.

I loved the world, the characters, the vibes, the plot, the romance, everything!!! I need more fantasy stand-alones like this one in my life.

Devoured this in one day! Loved it... super Uprooted vibes but I liked it way better than Uprooted. Really quick read and I loved it was a stand alone!

Was a bit bored at the start but I really enjoyed it! (May have just needed to get into the fantasy headspace after reading a contemporary romance)

Pretty standard YA fare

A guilty past to create conflict

It was very predictable that the fox was going to become a human. There were even more predictable bits about the fox as well

The nickname was weird. Just name your character Daisy if that’s what you want to call them.

I get she’s a scared teenager but… she’s so stupid sometimes. People are chasing you? But they call your name? Maybe it’s my friend! Maybe she’s okay! No… just no.

It had a decent pace until they got to the hidden city they were searching for. Then I found it lost it’s rhythm and I started to lose interest

The plan they make once in the city is so idiotic, it took me right out of the story.

Every “reveal” was aggressively predictable

It directly mentions the title twice in a paragraph and a half.

The ending was so very blah. So lacklustre
