I've always been less invested in Angel as a series, and I like Spike coming in and taking over like in season 5 this early... also the next volume is Angel and Spike so that sounds promising.

The thing about this Boom series, with their introducing characters from seasons deep in Buffy right at the start is that the development of the characters is being destroyed.

Angel isn't the Angel of the Angel TV series without being in Buffy's presence for three years. It was his love of Buffy that brought out his inner champion.

And as for Spike, he was a downright baddie until he got the chip in his head and joined the Scooby Gang so he could at least hit something and again, his love for Buffy and being around her began to change him.

In Boom all that development just magically happens for no good reason, and the result is some very poor story telling. Which continues the legacy of one of the best told stories, which makes it all the more disappointing.

I'm pretty close to thinking Fox/Disney should take the franchise off of Boom, move it to Marvel and try again. Do something to link the old show and comic timeline with the planned new TV show.
This series is killing the Buffy property.

He hates his own reflection. When you’re a vampire, you make people your mirrors.

Review for volumes 1 and 2. Although I enjoyed Angel the Series, I was really never attached to how the gang all got together and also thought Angel's backstory itself was sort of stunted by the limits of the medium & the budget. It's great seeing a more fantastical version of his history (and a flashy, gory interpretation of the vampires doing their vamp stuff), and though I'm not wild about the Lilith character essentially just telling the characters how to make a plot happen, I'll continue on to see how this remix of the OG Angel Investigations gang (Angel, Fred, Gunn, and Spike) come together.

Art is gorgeous and expressive and moody. Serious bummer about the awful sameface problem for the women, since clearly the artist is so skilled (welcome to comics i guess). I think with the male characters it hits a fabulous balance of stylized and reminiscent of the actors (Spike is a definite stand-out, and Gunn's got these big gentle eyes that remind you that he's the young, weak human of the bunch even if he talks a big game, and Lorne is both charming and frightening), but you cannot convince me that is Fred. Or Buffy. Or Lilah. Or Kate (I peeked at vol. 3). You cannot because they're all copy-pasted faces, and that face looks like none of them.

Generally the whole thing could use more agency and direction and charm but hey I'm along for the ride, let's see.

Anyways, more Spike in those terrible graphic tees please!

I really liked the art and the dark moments, plus the introduction of team angel. I think it was a perfect second volume in carrying on the narrative but also making do with the protagonist being missing. The ending felt a bit anticlimactic.

AMAZING. The way everything ties together for the crossover is really well thought out and the artwork is beautiful!
