It wasn't what I was expecting, halfway through I was bored to tears.
Ps: Harri I know he dumped you! I know! You don't have to say it a million times!

☆☆☆☆
The Other Side of Night is one of the strangest books I’ve read. The majority of the book is crime/police procedural. Closer to the end, the science fiction pops in and things get wild. There is a lot crammed into the last part of the book and I’m still trying to wrap my head around it. I don’t think I’ll ever entirely understand what I read. In this case, I think it would make more sense to me in the format of a movie or limited series.

While reading the book, I felt there was some repetitive information that slowed it down. And a few things became annoying. Such as Harri stating how much she loved Ben. They had only gone out on three dates! Some things became clearer after finishing the book.

A second reading of this book would provide more clarity.

Thank you to Atria Books for providing this gifted book through Edelweiss. All opinions are my own.

I was completely drawn in by the opening chapter, but unfortunately it fell off from there for me. It includes a story element that I just don’t enjoy.

It was a very slow, mysterious and melancholic book, you never have a chance to guess what’s happening really.

The characters were fairly one note, Harry got the most background work, but again she’s not really all that interesting.

The ending was the highlight of the book, despite the topic. It wasn’t predictable and was very sweet actually.

I don’t think I would recommend this to many people.

I'm giving this the second star because the prose is very eloquent and beautiful. However, the "twist" is the laziest trope available and makes very little sense. I thought this was going to be a mystery or even a case that was going to be solved. It was not. It was silly nonsense.

Well, the #bookstagram buzz got to me, and I had to read this book this past weekend. And as recommended by the publicist and other readers, I went into this one without reading the synopsis, because everything is a spoiler, and wow, I turned the last page and was left thinking "what did I just read?"

Chance encounters, love, loss, mysterious death, and a total blend of genres. It's exactly not a fast paced read but I also kept turning the pages furiously, needing to know what happened.

There are secrets and twists and the end went in a direction I don't usually gravitate towards in my reading choices and I simultaneously felt awestruck and totally in over my head. I didn't know what was happening but I also realized when I reached The Other Side of Night....

I already know this will be a super buzzy read for Fall 2022 and I can't wait to see the reactions from readers at the end of this month.

Thank you to Atria Books for my gifted copy.
