I've been looking forward to deep diving into Romanov history since my documentary, YouTube and Wikipedia rabbit hole into this fascinating family during COVID. And what a place to start! This felt like THE definitive book on Romanov history - one of the most fascinating, and enduring families of modern history.

From trials and tribulations, glory and gore, it was fascinating to see how, while History doesn't repeat itself, it sure does rhyme. From the glorious Peter and magnificent Catherine, to the more "mundane" ones such as Ivan and Paul, if the term can ever be used on characters as privileged as a Russian Monarch.

A big takeaway for me was in the conclusion, where Seabag reflected on how, interesting in each of Russias time of troubles, 1905, 1918 and 1991, the autocracy returned with the "Tsar", albeit in a slightly different flavour each time.

Frankly I got bored! I really wasn't absorbing a lot of information – I think the time period is just too broad to afford real detail, so it just reads as a salacious highlight reel. I'd be interested to read deeper on individual subjects but this format was not working for me.
