I loved this fun, cynical, and twisted book. It is not at all what I expected but I loved it! That ending though….

Terrible cover art that almost served as a deterrent. This is a surprising story of academic and romantic jealousy

An engrossing and thorny novel, with shades of Tár and Ottessa Moshfegh. Haunting and uncomfortable; well worth a read despite some writing that felt to me self-consciously literary, and an ending that seems to sidestep some of the book’s well-built character arcs, climax, and themes. The actual last sentence, however, is a real ripper.

Ok well this is definitely a contender for worst book of the year for me, but it’s only January so we’ll see!

So much nonsense, so little time. This book is a load of internalized woe-is-me misogyny mixed with a very healthy dose of condescension for everyone, but especially anyone younger than the narrator. She obsesses on age and beauty to an absolutely unreadable extent.

And then towards the end, the book jumps the shark and becomes something else. And then it scraps that idea and just ends things off like the deadline was coming up.

If someone were to ask me what this book was about I’d probably just say “a narcissist who’s obsessed with herself and never realizes it” and who really wants to read about that?
