I picked this up expecting a look at pre-Christian celebrations in England, but discovered that it's pretty much impossible to separate Paganism from Christianity, at least in England. The book was a fascinating look at Anglo-Saxon poetry, and the very early merging of Paganism and Christianity, and I learned a lot and came away with an extensive further reading list.

I would definitely recommend it to Pagans interested in learning about the actual history of the yearly celebrations, without religious speculation and wish fulfilment getting in the way.

Anglo-Saxon life in a time of two seasons…and how it’s been transformered since…

Winters in the World: A Journey Through the Anglo-Saxon Year by Eleanor Parker is a scholarly look at Anglo-Saxon seasonal traditions relying on a range of written accounts including recorded folktales, personal records, and correspondence…

I see the time of two seasons as they relied heavily on the winter and summer solstice to mark time with lesser holidays…

However, they did acknowledge other seasons but they were less important culturally…

As you peruse this book you will learn the differences between the time of the ancient Anglo Saxons and today…and how their seasonal celebrations and other holidays have changed…

Gone are the days of Eoster, Cheesefare week, and the month of Blood…replaced by other names and traditions…

A decent education on written Anglo Saxon literature and history along a specific theme…
