I really liked this! Sadly it took me a while to get into and while I did love the story once it picked up, it wasn't as overwhelmingly amazing as I've been told by almost everyone I know who has read it. I'll definitely be reading the last two though! I'm curious to see what happens.

I loved this book. The author's ability to weave such a complex story from old, haunting pictures is mesmerizing. Can't wait to read the sequel!

I started this book five years ago, probably for a high school book club, and DNFed not long after. I had been meaning to get back into it, but never got around to it, until now.

The concept of using old found photos to craft a story was so unique and definitely the highlight of the book. That being said, the main character Jacob was insufferable and very disrespectful to his parents and coworkers (even before his “horrific family tragedy”). I would have much preferred a story from the perspective of his grandfather. Once the peculiar children were introduced, the story became more interesting, but not by much. It was a bit too unsettling to me that grown adults were being treated like incapable children when they were anything but that.

I have no interest to read the sequel, even though it’s readily available for free at my library. So when in the midst of my late night reading session, I accidentally swiped too quickly and bought the sequel, I was deeply displeased to say the least.

Overall, this is probably a case of me reading a book five years too late and no longer being the target audience.

Good little story. Kind of X-men meets the Lost Boys meets World War II with time travel and monsters that travel through multiple dimensions and an undertone of questions around familial loyalty and betrayal. Curious story process with the interspersed found photos. Only a few times did the story seem forced to try to include a photo narrative.

I attempted to read this way back in 2014 but didn't finish it. For some reason it didn't engage me at all. However, with the movie adaptation coming out this month, I decided to give it a second try... and I kind of loved it. The quirky and hilarious writing style, the creepy and inventive fantasy world, and the time travel (I am time travel trash) all led me to devour this book in a day. Honestly, I can't remember the last time I managed to read a book so quickly. I'm intrigued to see what the second book holds. (also I can't wait to see the movie because my bby Eva Green plays Miss Peregrine WHAT)

I had heard good things about this book and bought the kindle version on a whim while stuck in Houston for 5 hours due to flight delays. It starts off interestingly and contains a number of compelling ideas, but the story is rather superficial and none of the compelling ideas are explored (this is especially true of the ideas about time). The characters are one note and, frankly, rather boring, which is disappointing for a book about "peculiar" children. Overall, if I had to choose again, it would not be this book.

That book was beyond amazing! Jacob and Emma are such intresting and funny caracters. And the pictures add soo much to the story. I cannot wait to jump into the second book!!
