This book was heart wrenching beautiful and so wonderfully written, I’ve always loved novels set in this period of time and have read plenty of them, but this has risen into my top five books of all time. I fell in love with the characters and my heart broke for them the entire book, I am so excited for the next one and anything else this author will bring out

The girl from Munich

Set in war time Germany, this is an interesting story. I found it hard initially to warm to a lead character who thought so highly of Hitler and the Nazi's. However her outlook is modified as events change her knowledge of the leaders in these terrible times. Ultimately she is a resilient and I came to appreciate her tenacity and loyalty to those closest to her.

The period after the war and the ongoing hardships experienced by survivors was especially interesting and the authors knowledge based on family history is clear.

The writing seemed slightly awkward to start with but ultimately I enjoyed the writing and the story. I plan to read the sequel when it comes out sometime down the track.

Predictable. Nothing new. Sympathetic enough main characters. A bit meh. Won't be reaching for the sequel

I think this was the first book (aside from The Book Thief) that I'd read about WWII from the perspective of Germans. What an absolutely fascinating and heartbreaking story.

Yes, I finished this about 3 weeks ago.

The Girl from Munich by Tania Blanchard is an emotional and thought provoking story from Charlotte von Klein's view of Germany under Nazi rule in the 1940s. It follows her relationship with Heinrich, her childhood sweetheart, whilst working for the Luftwaffe, giving all to the Fatherland. However in 1943 things change, the war appears that it is going against Hitler and Germany, and her world collapses. Heinrich has been sent away to work and Germany falls to Allied powers, she is forced to flee from the chaos with the darkly attractive Erich Drescher, her Luftwaffe superior.

This book is a rollercoaster of emotions and deserves nothing less than 5 amazing stars. Blanchard draws us into one of the most defining eras in history, seen from the viewpoint of a ordinary german girl. This is in stark contrast to the majority of books western Europeans are exposed to about this time period. The book shows readers that german citizens were also victims of the war. They had been brainwashed and tricked into believing that the war would solve all their country’s problems by Hitler, whose real intentions were truly sinister.

The Girl from Munich is inspired by the author’s Grandmother and her experiences and memorabilia from living in Germany in World War 2.

I enjoy reading Historical fiction, especially World War II fiction, but this is not what I expected it to be, and had I known more I probably would never have picked it up. I'm not a fan of Young Adult or Romance as I do not enjoy reading about immature characters, soppy storylines or love triangles so I'm probably not the best person to review this book, I just wish I wasn't the first one to do so. I did enjoy reading the parts of the book that described what was going on in Germany at that time, but for me they were too few and there was far too much focus on the relationships of the main characters, none of whom I really cared about.

I disagree with the many DNF reviews. This book was tolerable - it followed an entertaining plot (which improved drastically in the second half of the book). Some of the writing was excrutiatingly clichéd and cringeworthy, and the intimate scenes made me want to vomit. Other than that quite a good read...
