I followed Omar's election for US Representative in 2018, but I really didn't know anything about her aside from the fact that she was a Somali-American woman running for office. It was enlightening to listen to her tell her story in her words beginning from fleeing Somalia to her swearing in ceremony in January 2019. It was also great to hear a story told by somebody from a different culture than myself and to be more aware of the issues and privliges Omar has faced in her lifetime.

I really enjoyed this easy-to-read memoir. I stand with Ilhan on political issues around human rights and anti-bigotry, and now I have profound appreciation for her struggles and her tenacity. Her story is a template for the American dream. Her work as a public servant defends the spectrum of identities that make the USA what it is.
Her critics who come at her for being “ungrateful” or somehow anti-American, clearly view American identity as a narrow caucasian Christian myth. I understand disagreeing with her politics, but attacking her religion, national origin, gender, etc— is just clearly outside fair discourse.

While I was reading this, my husband randomly played a very informative video about Somalia and Somaliland. It was a nice coincidence to put the two sources of information together. This story was more person and the video was more politically informative about Somalia.
I enjoyed hearing her story and how she has managed to be so successful and so strong despite so much vitriol being thrown at her.

This was a very interesting read. It was heartbreaking and inspiring to see everything Ilhan Omar experienced. It was also a bit frightening to see how America reminds her of war-torn Somalia but it also serves to encourage readers to care. Very nice
