I'm only really giving it 3 stars because the book fulfilled its purpose in giving me something light-hearted and witchy to read. Otherwise I think I'd rate it lower because:

everything besides the plot felt surface level and superficial (which was unexpected for me, it felt like a fantasy writer attempted to do romance and didn't quite nail it)
I felt no chemistry between the characters- I think because a lot of it was dialogue and the descriptions fell short. Doesn't matter how many times you describe Josh as handsome, I didn't see or feel it. Same with the emotions. Might be because a lot of it was told
When the to MCs were together in a scene I often got lost on who's pov I'm reading. Their voices didn't sound much different.
The way Josh first described Blessing felt so cliche and weird, especially for all the other progressive points
There were a bunch of repetitions that probably didn't get edited out

I liked the house (though would love some more evocative descriptions) and Essie shitting on Josh for being such a *landlord*. I liked the importance she placed on fostering community. I also like the gender fluid rep and the plot was fun (tho a bit holey). But the romance side of things didn't quite do it for me and I kinda cringed through the sex scene.

Although I did enjoy Hex Appeal, I found the pacing to be a bit slow in parts. And sometimes the chapters would just jump to a whole new scene where it felt like some information was missing.

I also felt like the two main plots; the romance & the mystery, didn’t fully mesh with each other. At times it felt like I was reading two different stories.

But overall it was a fun read, and I enjoyed the cast of characters we got to meet.

This book is chaos and the blub does it absolutely no justice. It sounds like a run of the mill rom com with a little magic thrown in, but it is not.

This story is why the word "romp" was coined. I was taken for an absurd ride with absurd characters (ie glass parrots, evil bees?, and man-eating plants) that somehow felt like a warm hug. It is like no other book I have read so lets call it... a romcom on mushrooms in the best possible way.
