I’m surprised by the low ratings of this book. I haven’t read the other book people mention which I guess is similar in plot but as a stand alone book, retelling or not, the author writes a good story with well developed interesting characters (the lead character is a perfect mess) to where the plot twist in the end makes perfect sense. I would read another book by this author. Sometimes I notice that when Black authors write about Black characters in no race based stories people tend to mark them lower and say their characters aren’t relatable. In this case I would say maybe they just aren’t well read or should diversify their personal circles .
