I was sitting in the airport in San Francisco and remembered that I had this loaded on my e-reader. Since I had recently finished Mr. Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookstore and was there in the city of the titular shop, this was a perfect choice. This fun, short read follows Ajax Penumbra through San Francisco on his first book quest, years before he takes ownership of the bookstore open round the clock. A great, little addendum if you need more Penumbra.

An odd little bonus prequel appended to the end of the ebook. Adding bits to another story is something I like to see. This one was fun and interesting. There wasn't actually all that much to it. But it was readable and pleasant. 3.5 of 5

I cannot be certain I appreciate the book for its own merit or because of wanting to be a part of this delightful world and again hear the voice of Ajax. Intelligent. Quick. Tickled my brain.

This was absolutely perfect - I know it's a prequel so I have to find the first book now.

Such a great short story about the earlier life of Mr. Penumbra and how he ended up in the bookstore. I do advise to read the sequel, Mr. Penumbra’s 24 hour bookstore, first as this will make more sense or just mean more when you’ve read that book already.

It read through quickly, nicely written and intrigued me from the first page. Would definitely recommend.
