The prose is beautiful and the atmosphere is the right kind of bleak, but this is a very character-driven story and I found exactly none of the characters interesting.

This book is literary historical fiction, but could be read as environmental fiction. The emotional lives of the characters was stultifying and tedious, which took away from the overall enjoyment of the book.

A quiet atmospheric read. I enjoyed the way that the story was told in a fragmented way that alternated between different characters and time periods, but do understand how some would find this disorienting.  I liked the exploration of themes such as; grief, obsession, climate, love and colonisation. Though I do think there we a couple of instances where a plot point was set up really well to not really have much pay off later on. Overall though I did enjoy this book and would consider reading it again in the future.
