Charlie is back as the main character. Sadly, there is very little of Angel and Louis. In this book, we learn the secrets kept by Charlie’s parents, their friends, enemies, and some of Charlie’s mysterious protectors. The previously unknown story of Charlie’s parents and his beginning is terrible and sad and all part of the larger story web. The Collector makes an appearance, and we are introduced to the idea of Mr. Goodkind.  Connolly is a story weaver without equal.

There are some Michael Connolly books that I can’t seem to get into but this book I think could be a standalone book and I would still enjoy it.

It’s a bit supernatural for my tastes but I like the idea that there are angels out there eradicating evil and bad people but killing off people for the sake of religion or the future of sins that they think they might commit is a bit predictable.

I’m not the best at reviewing books as I think people have different ways of interpreting them and what I think or understand about the book might be something different to others.

Great book I would rate 4.5 stars as that’s only reserved for books that I can’t put down which I had to do this time due to work but I don’t think it’s a definite 5 stars

The reader of this book was wonderful -- great voice. I haven't read any other books in this series, but this worked well as a stand-alone.

This book will stay with me for a while. I think it's the best yet in this amazing series. Charlie Parker is a lost soul, in more ways than one. He has lost his private investigator's licence and has taken a job in a bar in order to keep ends meet. Seeing as he now has time on his hands, he wants to find out why his police officer father killed a young couple (the lovers of the title) and then killed himself. There was no question that Will Parker committed both acts but Charlie has never received a proper explanation as to why. As he investigates, he finds out more about why he seems to attract dark forces. Alternate chapters from the book are told first person, from Charlie's point of view, and then third person, as a description of events. John Connolly's writing is beautiful, despite the dark subject matter. "We haunt ourselves, I sometimes think; or, rather, we choose to be haunted. If there is a hole in our lives, then something will fill it. We invite it inside, and it accepts willingly."
