What can I say. I love this book. I didn’t expect to like this book as much as I did. People have been telling me to watch the movie for awhile but I wanted to read the book first. There were a few parts that were pretty confusing. It starts off in the present then goes back through flashbacks. I honestly didn’t expect all of the twists in the book. There was a lot of foreshadowing but I just thought the book was going to be about something completely different than it was.
The book has so many strong themes along with such complexity that I didn’t expect. I think when you really dive deep into this book, you see all of the critiques about society. Some large themes include anti consumerism, enlightenment, rebellion, violence, masculinity, etc. There are different things people can take from this book and the way they interpret it. For me it was really about society, capitalism and the lack of meaning in peoples lives. People need to find what they feel strongly about. What hill are you willing to die for?

I expected this to be a hard read but boy oh boy did I not expect just how hard of a read it was going to be. The first time I tried reading this I gave up three chapters in because the violent descriptions and the talk of how to make homemade explosives gave me that weird phantom pain in my knees. But this time I pushed forward and got through the whole book. I love the movie, it’s one of my favourite movies. But it was far more difficult to actually be in the narrator’s head the way you are in a book versus how it is watching it in a movie.

Man some of this was really hard to swallow. I loved it though. It was so brutal but it felt incredibly authentic. My problem with a lot of books this brutal is inauthenticity. This was great.

We are not special.
We are not crap or trash, either.
We just are.
We just are, and what happens just happens.
And God says, “No, that’s not right.”
Yeah. Well. Whatever. You can’t teach God anything.
God asks me what I remember.
I remember everything.

It’s hard to leave a review for this book without mentioning the movie, and wish I’d read it before I saw it. In knowing the whole story from the beginning, the book’s twist had no impact and left the whole thing feeling anticlimactic. That being said, I really enjoyed the relationship between the narrator and Marla in the book as opposed to the way they portrayed it onscreen. Palahniuk’s writing style is always somewhat disjointed and his classic “voice” has become classic because of works like this one. Glad I read it.
