I really enjoyed this! Two princesses, their fire dog, and loot cat with an eyepatch going on adventures. It has it all going on!

Just a warning, I was really drawn to the art, but the art in the comic is actually drawn by several artists depending on the story/chapter. Not that it's bad, some of the different art styles are really good and fitting to the story.

This book was shelved in the kid's section, but there's nothing shallow about it. Check it out if you want a good fantasy adventure.

This comic is a series of stories about two displaced princesses who are seeking adventure in the magical lands beyond the borders their warring realms. All the stories are taken up by different artists, but every artist equal to the task. It feels like myth-telling there is a very real feeling that this book is just retelling older tales.

The biggest sin this novel committed is failing to draw me into its world.

Cute, but I definitely enjoyed the vignettes at the end, rather than the main narrative. Unsure if I will read vol. 2, but it was very cool that this volume was illustrated by a variety of artists.

I'm not really sure what was so off putting about this one. It just felt meh? The story line was pretty weak, and I was really thrown by the vastly different art styles. It even felt like the characterizations changed throughout the book? It wasn't really a bad story, but it felt pretty disjointed, without enough depth to connect to the characters.

While this is tagged/marketed/shelved as YA, I think it would be most appreciated by a seasoned fantasy and graphic reader. This can certainly be a teen reader, but a casual or reluctant reader may be turned off by the chapter-to-chapter change in illustrators and their widely varying styles. I personally really enjoyed seeing the different interpretations of the three main characters especially, though cohesiveness was an issue; I back tracked several times to re-read previous sections because I was worried I missed something. As a librarian, I wonder who is reading this; adult YA readers like me or actual teens? I can imagine myself as a teen picking this up for the classic fairytale/fantasy elements and charm, but I wonder if I would have stuck with it?

All this said, I am enjoying these adventures and have moved on to [b:Spera, Volume 2|13590694|Spera, Volume 2|Josh Tierney|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1391978433s/13590694.jpg|19178681].

P.S. long live Chobo the warrior cat!

I liked the mini stories at the end the best. The demonboy was so scary to me that I actually had to put it down for a few days - how is this a children's book?! Finishing was totally worth it because Chobo the Warrior Cat. He wears an EYE PATCH, you guys.
