I am rereading the Goodnight Punpun series for the first time in about 4-5 years, and between anthropomorphic birds depicting domestic abuse, the disembodied head of god instructing characters to kill, and nearly every adult seemingly becoming members of a limb-flailingly-flamboyant cult... it is precisely as deranged as I had remembered. And needless t say, I will be devouring through the entire series as quickly as humanly (or birdishly?) as possible.

This manga took my heart out of my chest, crushed it, and then spit on it. It was one of the best manga I’ve ever read and I fully understand why it’s a cult classic. This is a super poignant coming-of-age story. The main character is drawn as a little bird in comparison to every other character being fully illustrated. The contrast makes the character stick out and makes you truly put yourself in his shoes. The relationships in this manga are deeply personal, funny, and heart-wrenching. If anyone has any doubts about graphic novels, this is a perfect example of how the medium truly upholds the story. I also fully can't describe how DISGUSTING the main character becomes. Please read all of the trigger warnings before reading this.

Ugh, this is so weird and kind of scary. It’s a normal primary school memoir. But aside from the oddness of Punpun, who is a weird bird thing, the humanoid characters come across as eerie. Their adventures are spooky. I loved it. And it freaked me the hell out.

This is hard to review. It's a very strange book, but at the same time, it's so incredibly down to earth in emotions and the pains and troubles of growing up in a dysfunctional family. I didn't want the book to end. I'll definitely look into the rest of the series.
