Yojimbo/ Red Harvest in space. But well told, all the same.

It’s a good read, very complicated so be prepared to follow quick combat and explosions and whatnot! It’s not my usual vibe as it’s very sci-fi but I would recommend giving it a go

This was fun read. A Sci-fi take on the western trope of a lone, nameless gunman strolling into town for only long enough to distribute her own brand of justice before departing. Though, even the Miner admits, there were a few tits up along the way.

I like the "cozy" setting of the story - everything takes place on a single space station, over a short period of time - and it kind of reminded me of the awesome Dredd movie from 2012.

I liked the Miner well enough, even though I usually prefer more in-depth depth characterization and backstory. We get enough hints to know her past was very... intense and interesting, and it makes me somewhat sad that we didn't get to learn more about it. I get it, though - lone, nameless gunman type. What can I say, I love me some badass older women.

Some of the side characters were a hoot. Herrera, in particular, can teach me to sweat any day. Bot-fucking syphilis reservoirs, indeed. Him and Takata will make a cute couple.

Overall, I would read this author again.

Not super deep or anything, but a fun sci-fi version of a 'wandering samurai' story. Managed to surprise me a few times.

If this was a movie it would be a Western directed by Quentin Tarantino. The fact that it is set in space is just a backdrop and the structure of the story would work in many settings. However, the space elements does give it an extra high stakes + scarcity of resources tension.

Bullet review:
- Blasé main character
- Western+Noir+Samurai
- Opposing gang factions
- Action packed
- Smart politicking
- Fraught with tension

I tend to like a bit more science and speculation in my SF, and would gladly have read another 50 pages to go more in depth with some characters but this was a great romp anyway! I thoroughly appreciated the MC's "I'm too old for this shit" vibes and her cleverness. You get the traditional barkeep ally in the local watering hole, and a few other tropes of those genres, which made this story hugely entertaining.

This book had so many interesting things going for it:

- female
- space
- feeling of a western

However, I began to notice something... something that was a little ... odd.

While the story was quick, without much detail and lingering things, it lacked 'feeling'. It was rather cold or emotionless. It followed the path of something like the 'mysterious man' and 'Magnificent 7'. Clean up an old spaceport. Turn the gangs against one another, take 'em all out.

I began to notice... this female acted a lot like a male. I then started to play a game:s flip the 'she' bits to a 'he'.... low and behold, there was nothing really 'feminine' or 'unique' about our hero. I can't tell you how many times the female 'rubbed her chin'. I mean, I've read stories with women with male-attributes or things stereotypical male... but man, this was one of those that really let me down.

A pass for me, unfortunately.

I just don't care about this book. I'm not interested in what's going to happen. I don't care about anyone in it. The main character doesn't even have a name...
