Not a bad book just not for me.

I read it as part of a book club and it was okay. Very easy/quick read. Interesting enough plot, but I found reading it a bit mundane. Not sure whether it's because I find that most thrillers/murder mystery "I had a past life" books are all the same to me or if it's just an okay book overall.

Characters:
Fine

Plot:
Multilayered but the layer focused on in the book was the least interesting of the lot. Would have enjoyed it more if it was focused on her first life.

Relationships:
Drew and Paris/Joey have a cute friendship but nothing to write home about. For a charter driven book - I would have preferred this be drawn out a bit more.

Would I recommend to someone:
Yeah, maybe if they were into this genre not otherwise.

SYNOPSIS
  • In Seattle, Paris Peralta’s husband, aka Jimmy Peralta, is dead. He was found in his own bathtub with his wife, Paris, beside him covered in blood & holding a straight razor. Jimmy is a lot older than Paris, and he is a famous comedian & he is pretty wealthy. Paris is arrested for first degree murder, and the media is very interested in Paris’s murder trial.
  • Twenty-five years ago, Ruby Reyes was convicted of a similar murder in Canada. Ruby knows all of Paris’s secrets, and Ruby is threatening to expose her secrets.

MY THOUGHTS
  • Fourth Hillier book I’ve read, and she’s quickly become one of my favorite authors of the genre. However, this is least favorite one of hers so far.
  • Predictable & easy to figure out.
  • Check out trigger warnings.
  • Average thriller.

TL;DR: ⭐️⭐️⭐️not hillier’s best work.

Wow- another 5 star by Jennifer Hillier! Her stories are so compelling and so devastating. The heartache I felt for Joey and the rage I felt at ruby were visceral. It was a great mystery, both the current one surrounding Paris and the old one involving Joey. I was rooting for both of them. And while Hillier’s stories of trauma are brutal and sometimes hard to read, I love that
she lets the women win in the end. She gives them an ending not often afforded to women like them in real life.
will definitely be reading more of her work!
CHECK TW!
