I was enjoying this at the start but have ended up getting quite bored. Alexander is set up as so noble and godlike from the start that there's really no character arc or progression? There's leaning into the legend of Alexander and then there's instant godhood with no struggle. The narration style felt weirdly non-fiction at times - there would be stretches that felt they could have been lifted from a biography that quickly summarised events which would then go into a heavy dialogue interaction etc. Just not feeling invested enough to continue!

La prima metà del libro l'ho letta in due settimane, mentre dalla battaglia di Cheronea in poi l'ho praticamente divorato. Ho trovato comunque anche nella seconda parte delle pecche che sono onnipresenti nell'opera. La più grande è sicuramente la caratterizzazione dei personaggi: oltre Alessandro, si salvano Olympias, Filippo ed Eumene, mentre gli altri sono tutti macchiette stereotipate oppure con personalità appena accennate di cui ti dimentichi cinque minuti dopo. Altro problema, derivante dal primo, sono i rapporti fra alcuni personaggi: se Efestione è il migliore amico di Alessandro, fammelo vedere durante la narrazione e non due pagine all'inizio e altre due più avanti in mezzo alle montagne! Stessa storia con Perdicca e Cleopatra: se siete amanti fammelo vedere, e non dirmelo verso la fine tipo "Ah, sì, Cleopatra non è vergine ed è stata amante di Perdicca ma ora è sposata e chi se ne frega": se poi al lettore non importa niente dei personaggi è anche per questo!
Per il resto, la narrazione l'ho trovata abbastanza lenta in qualunque scena non fosse di battaglia: Manfredi è uno scrittore che sa fare bene azione, e infatti darò una chance al resto della trilogia proprio per questo, dato che le scene di sangue - visto che Alessandro va finalmente a conquistare l'Asia - sono di più. Speriamo meglio.

Here's the thing. I would have loved this book when I was ten, reading Percy Jackson and fangirling over anything related to mythology or ancient history. Don't get me wrong tho, I still love mythology and ancient history, actually right now my whole IB projects are based on Alexander, but still this book was so meh to me.
If I was judging with the criteria of a 10 year old, this would probably be my favorite book as it addresses my favorite history men ever and the language is so simple that even me (who in that time was not fluent in English) could understand it.

علي حسب ما شفت عالجودريدز فيه اكثر من سلسلة روائية بتحكي قصة الإسكندر الأكبر و أقل من المتوقع كمان بالنسبة لشخصية من أعظم شخصيات التاريخ زيه.
بس سلسلة فاليريو ماسيمو مانفريدي تعتبر هي أشهر و علي ما أعتقد أقواهم علي الإطلاق حتي من غير ما أقراهم.
رواية بتحكي تاريخ الإسكندر بأسلوب مميز جدًا ملئ بالإثارة و قوي أدبيًا في نفس الوقت.
الإسكندر قال جملة في الرواية فيما معناها انهم هينطلقوا في رحلة تماثل رحلة أخيلس بس في الغالب مش هيلاقوا حد زي هوميروس يحكي حكايتهم المقولة حقيقية جدًا بس انا مبسوط ان بلوتارك و مانفريدي حكوا حكايتك و تقريبًا دول اهم كتابين عن الإسكندر و هحاول اقرأ كتاب بلوتارك عن الإسكندر في يوم من الأيام.
الكاتب وصل جو اليونان القديمة كما يجب ان يكون مغلطش في سطر لا و عمل حاجة روعة دول ناس كانوا طول الوقت مؤمنين بآلهة و أساطير من الطبيعي جدًا ان تكون الأساطير دي موجودة في كل نواحي حياتهم فجو النبؤات و الظواهر اللي بتحصل حتي آخر جملة في الرواية لما الإسكندر قذف رمحه اللي اترشق في الارض و هز أسيا كلها و ده حتي ميعتبرش واقعية سحرية لان ده كان واقع البلاد دي فعلًا و بسبب كده الرواية تستحق عشر نجوم كمان مش خمسه بس.

قائد قوي بجيش قوي جدًا بريًا يقدر يمحي مدينة طيبة لو حب بس مع ذلك عمل كل اللي يقدر عليه عشان ميوصلش لحرب معاهم بس للأسف كان مصير مدينة طيبة اتقرر خلاص هما اصروا علي الحرب لان ده كان مصيرهم
الإسكندر لولا سياسته دي مكنش وصل لربع اللي وصله عمل تحالفات وقت ما احتاج للتحالفات عمل و كان بيفضل السلم عن الحرب و ده شئ مهم جدًا في غازي و متهايئلي لو بصينا علي غزاة العالم القديم و حاولنا نرتبهم هيبقي الإسكندر متربع علي القمة بفرق كبير جدًا عن رقم اثنين اللي ممكن نقول انه جنكيز خان.
و الحقيقة انا حابب اني اتعمق في قراءتي عن روايات بتمثل احداث تاريخية مهمة جدًا زي كده بالأخص عن غزاة العالم القديم

حابب ادور اولًا علي اسم الراجل اللي وصل امبراطورية الفرس لمجدها لو مجدها متعلق برجل واحد زي امبراطورية الإسكندر و اقرأ سلسلة روائية عنه اذا وجد.
حابب أقرا عن نابليون و هتلر و رمسيس الثاني اذا وجد سلاسل روائية تخصهم و علي حد علمي موجود بالفعل عن رمسيس الثاني بس الاثنين الثانيين معرفش موجود حاجة زي كده عنهم ولا لا.

This is not a book to binge-read, for me. Instead, it’s a beautiful book that needs a slow reader to appreciate all of his beauty, the brilliant setting, the accurate historical research made by the author and the heroic -but also totally human- main character and his friends group who will conquer your heart

Forrygende, interessant og spændende, - men desværre også tilpas tør til at den kan være vanskelig at komme igennem, selvom den har en del positive elementer, der driver historien frem.
Selvom Alexander er en dyb og velbeskrevet karakter som nogen med lethed vil kunne identificere sig med, når man aldrig rigtigt ind til hvad det er, der driver værket og holder ham kørende, og det kan gøre ham en smule vanskelig at holde af.
