Okay I absolutely loved this book (I already preordered the sequel "The Glass Sword")! It was written in a style that made me wonder what would happen next but not to the point where I was upset that the dots weren't connecting. It really was a beautiful and heart-wrenching book and not in the completely gushy way many YA novels are nowadays. Mare was perfect, I can only imagine how hot Cal is, and Maven made me wonder. I loved all the main characters even the evil queen Elara. This book didn't really remind me of another book and I think that is a huge win for Aveyard. I shall be waiting impatiently for the release of The Glass Sword.

It feels like it's been a while since I've read a YA novel that was so good. Don't let me down with the next one, Victoria Aveyard! And can everyone please stop shelving every new YA as dystopia? This is pure fantasy, guys.

I liked this as light read that could potentially get more interesting as the series continues. However I absolutely hate the comparison between any of Sarah J. Maas’ books and this one. Maas’ books are complex and compelling and this wasn’t. This was interesting but very basic, there was nothing that really threw me except the very end which once you thought about it wasn’t that shocking. The characters were also pretty basic and honestly not very impressive or memorable. The main character was set up as being a smartass but you barely saw that and by the end I felt she digressed in whatever little character “growth” she had.
Although there was a lack of depth it was still gripping in some parts and left you wondering how this conflict could be resolved. I would suggest those that enjoy quick reads read this.

This book was really well written! The world-building was awesome and the characters were so distinguishing. Also, THAT PLOT TWIST THOUGH!

A promising start to a series.

I am hoping that the romance is reigned in a bit more in the next two books; an entire revolution does not, in fact, depend on one.

Mare made a big show of yelling that she doesn't choose anyone in The Confrontation, but let's see if Aveyard can back it up.

Ok seriously the ending?! I wanted to "read" faster once I got past 75% but I was listening to the audiobook. So good and now I need to know what happens next. That can be published any time now, thanks.

Can’t pinpoint exactly what it was about this book, but it didn’t reel me in, couldn’t get hooked like I usually do in fantasy. Maybe I wasn’t in the mood for a dark dystopian setting, it was actually depressing. Or maybe there was no effort in making the male love interest actually likeable?? I literally didn’t want her to end up with him lol.
