A painful truth, that the cycle of addiction is abusive it is a daily choice you have to make to be better, and is made up of all your smaller choices/actions. You can be better or the same it’s up to you.

Ito really took his creative liberties with this adaptation. Every few moments is just “that didn’t happen, that didn’t happen.”
And I really didn’t expect it to become meta selfcest fanfiction nearing the end with Dazai though I guess it can be argued as to why it makes sense.
The sex and sexual violence in this is absolutely insane. Every 10 pages is a new sex scene it’s crazy. Many of them not needed imo. Especially the incest baby. Why. I guess it pairs well with the obscene misogyny of the actual novel in a more visual way. But damn. Alright.
Art is beautiful as always but not my favorite Ito manga by a long shot. Worth reading once, especially if you like the OG book.

Really intense, but really well done. As a book, I mean its masterful and raw. In terms of Junji Ito's rendition of it, I think the illustrations definitely help with certain themes, such as a
Takeichi being "reborn" as Yoichi. And also the delusions and envisioning different people inhabiting one person.
I think this is wonderfully done and really resonated with me.

Junji Ito is a genius. On its own, No Longer Human seemed like a daunting piece of literature I wasn’t too inclined to read. Ito’s adaption makes the story a lot more approachable and digestible. Only a master of horror could aptly embody Dazai’s tortured psyche in a manga adaption. It was fucked up and eerie— and I loved it.
