How to review poetryā€¦. Hmmm

I guess honesty is important! I did see myself in a few of these poems, and I enjoyed the themes the author used, places in a home ā€œattic, front porchā€ that was a new take. Overall I didnā€™t really feel a lot from these poems. I did not cry, at all. And I like a good cry when I read poetry.

madisen kuhn is one of my all time favorite writers. sheā€™s inspired me in my writing so much to be vulnerable and unforgivingly myself. her heart and soul and mind are so beautiful, and theyā€™re all splattered along the pages of all three of her books. almost home makes me miss the home i built within myself when i was younger, and reminds me that itā€™s okay iā€™m still rebuilding itā€”and even more so that i am finding things hidden behind the walls inside of me. thank you, madisen, for making me feel at home with your words. thank you for trusting meā€”usā€”with your heart. i vow to protect it always.

Iā€™ve read Kuhnā€™s poetry since eighteen years came out and this collection feels like sheā€™s really evolving as a poet. The way she played with form, digging deeper, and presenting raw, unfiltered poetry is something I adored about this collection. Watching her come into herself as a poet has been a beautiful thing.

Favorite poems in each section from this collection:
the kitchen
-where do i go from here
-blooming in concrete
-estranged
-dream homes
the attic
-when I wake
-yellow
the bedroom
-st. christopher
-werewolf
-undying
-an ode to almost lovers
-the moon
the bathroom
-caelum
-float away
-how to love
the garden
-philadelphia in may (a daydream)
-orion
the front porch

As someone who has never felt like I had a home mentally or physically, this resonated a lot with me. This is a new favorite. šŸ’•

A beautiful collection of poems that resonated with me so well. I find myself reaching for this book daily when I feel down or need to escape for a little.

Almost Home is a raw and honest tale of self discovery. Madisen beautifully writes about letting go of expectations and finding hope in who you will become. Itā€™s a wonderful set of poems about growth.

I devoured this collection and loved essentially every poem and will be buying a copy for my library shelves. It was the perfect balance of emo/nostalgia for myself and experiences of my adolescence and early 20s and resonated deeply. I adored how the author organized the collection and the themes of a home (physically as well as mentally). It was artistically constructed and added to my overall reading experience. She also wove in a lot of nature infused metaphors which Iā€™m always a sucker for in poetry. I canā€™t wait to read more of her collections especially as she ventures into new life events such as motherhood & her thirties.Ā
