2.5 stars.

This had some interesting concepts and good action sequences, but the cheese factor just really brought it down for me.

Young apprentice falling in love with her teacher.
“She couldn’t help comparing her breasts” Come ON.

It could have been a really good book, but it ended up feeling kind of vapid and silly. Unfortunate.

Such a fun tale! The magic system in it is amazing. If any man made material can be used for magic then conceivably anything could end up as a type of magic. I'm sure cloth could be a magical medium. And I really enjoyed the way flesh magic was able to come about.

It seems though that paper magic is so fragile and has to be really planned in advance that it's no wonder that paper magic is falling out of practice. Glass or metal magic would be better for adventures as long as the magician was able to prep the right kinds of spells. Paper is probably much better for spur of the moment spells.

Such a good book!

Delightful and whimsical while still being a bit dark.

Cute story, very fast read. Seems like a book a teen or young adult would enjoy.

This was a fun concept, an idea of magic I have not read before.

*Spoilers*

The apprentice having had barely any training made her rescue attempt not even a little bit believable. We needed so much more back story and world-building. I guess that's why this is a YOUNG adult novel; one that is perhaps truly written for that age group, more than most YA fiction.

The imagined love story had so little development that it, too, felt forced; and at that age to be in love with someone so much older than her is gross. The whole thing would have been better, and more believable, with the adversarial relationship between apprentice and magician, rather than a love/attraction connection. This is the type of thing that gives kids completely wrong assumptions about "love."

I'm going to keep reading because I'm hoping we'll learn more about the other types of magic... Hope I'm not setting my hopes too high.
