Pros:

For people who loved the television show it seems like they pulled directly from the text.  It has been a while since I saw it so I could be wrong but it may be one of the best adaptations around.

With the worry about reproductive rights I feel like this book should be required for the masses.  This is what happened when people couldn’t afford or trust the medical field.  The things in this book are what happened when people weren’t educated or able to take preventative measures.  There was so much pain, suffering and death and it could all come back.

Cons:

I don’t think there is anything wrong with any pet of this book but I had hoped for it to have more than the show did and it didn’t feel like it did.

I fancied something a bit different as I’ve read a lot of fantasy recently.
I loved the series so was nice to read the book it all stemmed from.
Read a bit like an autobiography but not enough to put me off - as I’m not always a big fan them!
The characters came to life throughout the pages and I enjoyed that each chapter was a different story or a different part of the same story.

I never say this... I prefer the tv show... Probably because they spend more time (an episode) developing each pair of stories. It's not that I didn't like this, I just adore the TV show.

I really enjoyed listening to this book. It was informative and I learned so much about midwifery and life in London's East End in the 1950s. Mrs. Jenkins's story just about broke my heart, I can't begin to imagine how difficult it must have been for her to go on with life day after day. I could have done without Jenny's religious revelations at the end of the book, but overall, it was great and I look forward to listening to the rest of her trilogy.

This book was so brilliant. It was personal and riveting and real. Great balance of history and storytelling. Incredible.

After falling in love with the TV version of Call the Midwife, I decided to give the source material a shot. I quite enjoyed Worth's memoirs, although many of the stories were familiar to me from the TV show (though often with a little alteration). I loved the story of Chummy and love that they kept her character very similar in the show. However, I found Sister Monica Joan to be more mean spirited in Worth's memoirs - her taunting of Sister Evangelina and the musicians wasn't charming at all!

Worth does a wonderful job depicting London's East End and the difficulties of giving birth and raising a family in the conditions. I disagree with the reviewers who call out Worth for her "holier than thou" attitude. I think it's important to remember that she was a product of her time and one can't expect her to be espousing our present day views! It was interesting to see how different child birth was for the people of the East End in the 1950s! So different from the hospital births that we are accustomed to now!

I am hoping to check out the rest of Worth's memoirs in the near future!

I loved this as an audio book. This time I'm sure that the audio was better than reading it for me.

The show follows the plot of the book, fairly closely which is to be expected. However the book contains a wealth of beautiful detail that never quite made it into the show. This book is a wonderful snap shot of a place and time I really didn't know much about.
