Overall, this was a fun, quick read. It seemed to fall into some of the traps that a lot of early science fiction did, like taking an Earth-like creature, giving it a couple extra limbs, and calling it a Martian. There were also a lot of "Oh, that's convenient..." moments, but they didn't take too much away from the experience. I enjoyed the cliffhanger the book ended on, and look forward to reading the sequels.

Loved this. Barsoom, the planet where everyone walks around naked. It's all adventure and fighting strange 6 limbed aliens and falling in love with Princesses, not to mention flying ships and a mad chap in a wheelchair that extracts brains and body parts from people to build a steampunk army.

If you like the idea of a rollicking adventure with aliens, princesses, heroes and mad scientist types, then go to standardebooks or epubbooks for free copies. I used the 'standardebooks' site which is a great project to support in itself.

Don't hesitate to read this one, it's fantastic.

I originally found out about this book while my husband was telling me about Larry Niven books. He was describing a plot to me and I said to him “Wow, this reminds me of that movie we just watched”, which happened to be John Carter. So out of pure curiosity I looked up the movie and saw it was based on this book series. I immediately bought the entire collection. To say the least, I really enjoyed this little sci fi nugget.

This was a satisfactory adventure. The writing got a little bland, but I enjoyed the descriptions of Martian wildlife and developed a fondness to the wooly dog-like creature in the book. This reads a little like male fantasy fulfillment because the protagonist is physically superior to everyone else around him. It lends itself very well to being made into an action-packed movie, which I suppose is why they're making one now.

"A Princess of Mars" is corny, entertaining vintage Sci-fi. It was an inspiration behind both "Avatar" and "Star Wars," as is soon obvious. The story follows the adventures of Virginian and Confederate soldier John Carter, an immortal man who is inexplicably transported to Mars, or Barsoom to the natives. Barsoom is subject to severe civil distress, as Carter soon discovers. How he gains renown as a warrior, falls in love with the titular princess, and brings some unity to Barsoom makes up the rest of the story. A quick, action-packed read, "A Princess of Mars" was pretty fun-though I agree with reviewers who found Carter's 1st person self praise irritating. However, this was more of a writer problem than a character problem. John Carter himself is both sympathetic and likable. Bottom line: diverting.
