”He was right in the end. Romance wasn't dead, after all.”

i wanted to start my ashley poston journey because so many people rave about her books. i absolutely love this book, one of the reasons being it is very similar to my favorite tv show ‘six feet under’. there were so many parallels that i spotted and even a brief mention of the show so i appreciate that !
but wow this book just felt like a warm hug? like suffocating but all the more comforting. it deals with grief beautifully and there’s genuine connection and romance.
i cant wait to read another one of piston’s books :)

It was a little sad, but it was also filled with a lot of hopeful undertones. A lot of the times that I cried, it was because of something sweet that happened. And don’t get me started on how much I relate to the mc. I’m so glad I gave this book a chance👻🖤

I loved this book! It's very nicely written and it deals with grief in a truly beautiful way. I loved Ben and all the secondary characters (I have a soft spot for small towns settings). At first, I didn't know how everything was going to work out until I saw it all coming. Still, I think the twists were fun and interesting. I'm taking half a star because, even though I'm a swiftie, the Taylor references came out of nowhere and were even wrong (naming "the story of us" as a romantic song) and some things made me cringe (like the thing about putting googly eyes on his abbs???)

The second half was stronger than the first. I enjoyed the character development throughout the story and seeing Florence gain confidence.

🐦‍⬛ Author's Note 🐦‍⬛

The Dead Romantics is a story about a ghostwriter for a famous romance novelist who must return home when her father unexpectedly passes away, and face the ghosts of her past... and the ghost of her recently deceased (and very, very sexy) editor.

It’s a story about love and all of its different faces— romance and grief and anger and homesickness. But most importantly, it’s about learning to not be a ghost in your own life.

🐦‍⬛

» Florence navigates heavy themes and holds it together well, demonstrating her strength. I cheered for her during her high points and sympathized with her in the low ones.

» Benji Andor was stoic, dreamy, and everything we want from a misunderstood MMC. I saw his struggle early, but I was stunned by his twist.

Have you seen a ghost flit through, by any chance? Six-foot-sexy with just the slightest hint of nerd?

» Watching their romance bloom was exciting, and the gradual build of tension to their honest declarations was perfection. She believes romance is dead, but he won’t let her off that easy. It’s not a smutty read, but the few moments of intimacy they share made my heart race.

I just like love stories, I guess. I like the way they paint the world in this Technicolor dreamland, where the only rule you have to follow is a happily ever after.❞ - Benji Andor

✩ Eileen Stevens narrates this brilliantly. Florence’s emotions and experience were accurately and believably portrayed; it made my ears happy.

♡ I experienced all the emotions reading this. I laughed, I swooned, I bawled and ultimately devoured the story. Ashley Poston wrote a flawless, emotional novel that broke my heart and stitched it back together by the end. I didn’t expect to love it as much as I did but I’m confident it will live rent-free in my mind for a long while.

Unfortunately, this didn't work for me even though I adored Seven Year Slip. I think it was something about the tone or I was never sure of the mechanics of how Florence's ghost vision worked, or I was never 100% sold on the concept of her falling in love with a ghost.  I do think Ashley Poston does and incredible job of bringing conversations about grief into love stories and I did like how that was handled in this, but overall not a win for me.

This was super cute, easy to read, and pretty well written! I appreciate the attention paid to place, almost place as character. I found the main characters fleshed out as well. Enjoyed getting to read about characters who work in the publishing industry. Not something we see as often!
