It was more “romancey” that I normally go for. I felt the main character was a little forced into the “independent woman” box. The conflict between her and her love interest made no sense to me. It was okay.

After writing my thoughts out - it was more like a 3.

As a WW2 buff, I love finding novels that give us compelling stories about the unknown heroes who helped fight the war. In Ms. Salazar's novel, THE FLIGHT GIRLS, we get to know her flight girl characters from the Pearl Harbor attack to their training in Sweetwater, TX. A little romance and action set within the historical backdrop of the WASP program.

It's unfortunate that the stories of the WASP's (Women Airforce Service Program) and their contributions have been minimized. There was no escaping the fact that women would be an essential asset in winning the war. If you're looking for a strictly non-fiction historical overview of the WASP program, that's not what this is. Although it provides us information about what these women endured (ie their training in Sweetwater, TX), it is a fictional story. As one who loves a little history mixed with a little romance when reading, this certainly hit that target.

Ms. Salazar introduces us to several young women whose fearless determination drove them to do what their country asked of them, knowing there would be little to no acknowledgement and a great deal of resistance from those who thought a woman's place was in the kitchen and....well, you know.

The story is told through the eyes of Audrey Coltrane, who's desire to be independent took her to Hawaii to make a life on her own. Teaching new Airforce male recruits how to fly, she finds herself in the air as the Japanese come in for the Pearl Harbor attack. The story is told with the reality of war time and how quickly lives were lost. Audrey finds love, experiences incredible loss, and builds strong friendships with her fellow WASP's.

Beautifully told story where Ms. Salazar's crisp and vivid writing allows the reader to briefly become immersed within this world and sadly finding that we've come to the end of the story.

Ms. Salazar's next novel cannot come soon enough!

PS: There are many stories about women who contributed to the war effort. The "six triple eight" WAC's, Harriet M. Waddy, one of the two highest-ranking black officers in the WAC's, and the Ninety-Nines.

Fascinating period in history. Book was a little slow in places and contained some historical inaccuracies/ improbabilities.

I love the historical references to Pearl Harbor and WW2.  This played out in my head like the Pearl Harbor movie (not the same story, but great imagery).  You're invested in the real world battle of female pilots being accepted by the military, but at the same time you're holding on to hope for her romantic happy ending.
