the abuse is almost entirely verbal and emotional and mostly is recounted to the main character. there is a scene on page that is physical, but it's not in the traditional sense of hitting, kicking, etc. More details below. The abusive character does grip her child by the arm aggressively in order to control him.

Halfway through the book, in a chapter titled Like This, Aled's mother forcibly gives him a haircut despite his protests. It's a tense scene as Frances is there watching in horror. Afterwards, there is blood on Aled's hand from trying to stop his mother coming at his hair with the scissors

detailed animal warning:

In the chapter titled Burning, Aled comes to Frances' door sobbing uncontrollably because his mother had his dog put down while he was away at university. You can skip this short chapter without missing anything except that Aled's hair is a vibrant new color. The dog's death will be mentioned a few more times later on, always by characters horrified and angry at the mother.

This book ripped my heart out in the best possible way. I related so much to Aled and Francis and their anxieties over college and figuring out who they were. I found Solitaire and The Nick + Charlie novella underwhelming so I was putting off reading the last two books I had to read in the Osemanverse…but I’m so glad I loved this one❤️❤️❤️

P.S. Carol Last needs to be thrown into the sun for all the pain she inflicted upon her children, please and thank you :)

I normally adore alice oseman’s books but this one didn’t quite capture me in the same way… it was still good, she is a brilliant writer but it wasn’t quite for me! :)

This was the best oseman book I’ve read! It was incredible I read it in 2 days. It was just amazing and reading Ollie’s copy just made it so much better!

I think this book is a great one to read during your senior year of high school, it really does a good job at capturing a lot of the feelings that come with college applications and preparing for the future and whatnot. I think a lot of people feel seen by this book which is fantastic. My only thing is that I didn't LOVE how awkward the dialogue felt at times but I'm not really pressed about that I still really enjoyed it.
