I should’ve known Brian K. Vaughan was gonna pull some bull shit in this final installment. Not me absolutely heartbroken and also sobbing for multiple reasons. Then it just ends up being the perfect ending after all?! Wow I’m sad it’s over but glad I live in a world with storytellers like Vaughan in the world.

The last issue saved the final volume, at least for me.

Um… lol

What happened here??????

I don’t regret reading this series at all.

Now that we’ve gotten that out of the way.

…I don’t like Alter’s, Hero’s, either Beth’s, Yorick’s, or 355’s storyline. We spend so long trying to find Original Beth, and then when we do we have a garbage breakup, and then a profession of love for 355, then her murder, then….. nothing except for as another reader mentioned a tacked on feeling epilogue.

Wait and why did he marry Other Beth and why did Original Beth end up with his sister — WTAF?

It feels like we dilly dallyed around for years? A decade? For the most rushed ending. That wasn’t even good.

I guess I recommend this series to those new to graphic novels or who enjoy them, those who think the premise is interesting, those who like binge reading, and those who are looking for 2000s nostalgia.

I never thought a comic book could break my heart and make me cry, but this one did it.

This was an interesting end to a complex series. Truthfully, I'm still deciding exactly what I think now that it's over. Book 5 does improve on some of the issues I had with 4. And many of the strengths of the series play out well here. I continue to have some issues with Vaughan's work but there's no denying that his stories are engaging and imaginative.

As far as the grand explanation and wrap-up, it's hard to say. The tie-back to other points in the series was interesting, and I can appreciate the ambiguity and twists that Vaughan allowed to exist in the finale. In retrospect, I'm not sure if I would have wanted the ending to be anything different, and the last scenes with Yorick felt satisfying to me. But the ending felt kind of strange at the same time.

So I'll leave it with this: Vaughan is a fascinating and talented storyteller and he's willing to make some choices in his writing that are risky but ultimately memorable. Y: The Last Man has been an imperfect ride, but it's one I don't regret undertaking.
