I thought this was non fiction until almost halfway through (so also thought the narrator was female), so I felt a bit misled when I found out it was fiction!

It's a reflection on growing up as a Dutch kid in Indonesia, and the way the narrator's life takes a different path from his Indonesian best friend. An interesting story, with important themes, although I didn't like the fake autobiographical style.

The writing does powerfully evoke the landscapes, but I had to look up a lot of words, and many of them were not even in the dictionary 🫠

I've genuinely not experienced fiction like this in such a long time. I think Haasse perfectly captures the experience of a child which witnesses events of which they can only comprehend their significance at a later time. Subtly emotional.

Simple and yet gripping, I was in goosebumps by the end.

I was a bit disappointed with the ending. Nothing really "big" happens in this book.

Beautiful short novel on the friendship between a Dutch and an Indonesian boy in the Dutch Indies. Was capable of stirring up nostalgia within me for places in time I have never visited.
