I am already incredibly biased toward Adam Silvera’s writing, but even then this quickly became one of my favorites of his. It’s a prequel, but can be read as a stand alone. To be honest, I loved it more than its predecessor. It breaks your heart and puts it back together again, set in a New York that Silvera captures perfectly. I don’t usually scream at books, but I may have flung this one down several times. One of those books that I would give anything to read for the first time again.

It was a solid read! I’ve really enjoyed the author’s tone and lingo throughout his books, especially in the way he uses it to shape each character’s voice uniquely. Orion’s perspective was particularly captivating, and I appreciate the author not slaughtering everyone at the end like the first book—I WAS SO SCARED FOR THATT. I also found Paz and Gloria’s plot line to be a valuable addition to the story that really added to the context of death. It was interesting to learn more about Death-Cast but I feel like the ‘explanation’ was still pretty vague and lacking in some ways when he just mentioned a ????vault???? Idk and also I didn’t totally love Valentino’s character; his actions and intentions and morales were solid but his personality was really bland—I think it was so much so that it stuck out to me a bit and made it hard to fall into his dynamic with Orion who had a much clearer sense of personality. Regardless the themes and dialogue and twisting plot  were all great, and I think for a second book it did its job and was a truly enjoyable ride!! Also didn’t think I would end up crying but there were a few tear-jerking passages that definitely took me by surprise!

As difficult as much of this story was to read, it's truly a beautiful and inspiring love story at its core. It features found family and grief and love and life. It's a reminder on how we should be living, because we never know when it could all come crashing down around us.

After reading They Both Die at the End, I kept expecting the same story to unfold which probably took away from my experience reading this one a little bit, but it's still worth the heartbreak!
