Oh wo\w, this was so good. I just want to give it to every middle school student I know.
As usual, Jamieson's art is spot on. Omar's story though? Equal parts heartbreaking and hopeful, spanning his life during the ages 11-17. He shows what it was like living in a refugee camp not only for him and his brother, but others around him. His foster mother Fatuma, and what she lost in her lifetime. The girls at school and their challenges to even get an education. Waiting for the slim possibility of being resettled...and what can happen when you aren't.
I've had a lot of middle schoolers and young teens who have read Refugee by Alan Gratz and want more stories like that. This will be one to give them (and to students like that "real" stories, graphic novels...really, like I said above, I just want to give this to everyone).

If you ask young people to read only one book this year, make it this one. If you yourself read only one book this year, make it this one. This is the side of the world we don’t see, because we’re not looking. Everyone needs to look and keep looking until we see the humanity and the tragedy and have a good answer for why we let it continue.

Absolutely amazing. One of the best books I’ve ever read. I felt like I knew Omar.

Omar and Hassan Mohamed grew up in a Kenyan refugee camp, having fled Somalia as young, young children (aged approx 3 and 4). Separated from their mother during their flight and having witnessed the death of their father, Omar is forever dreaming of finding their mom and returning to farm in Somalia. But as the days, months and years roll by, his goals evolve to those of getting an education and finding a way out of the refugee camp. After 15 years (!!), Omar's dreams are realized.
Omar's story is told in this graphic novel and it is a powerful story, made gentler through Jamieson's artwork. This book, revealing the stark realities of day-to-day hunger, disappointments, community and hope in a refugee camp, is made accessible to readers of any level.
This is my first graphic novel, which I read solely to fill a Bingo square for a reading challenge. I am glad to have stretched out of my comfort zone for this.

4.5 stars. All in all this is a moving book about life in a refugee camp though I was a little disappointed that some of the people that you become invested in were fictionalized.

Fabulosa. Una novel·la gràfica dirigida en principi a adolescents, però que també hauríem de llegir els adults.

Fabulosa. Una novela gráfica destinada a priori a los adolescentes, pero que también es necesaria que leyamos los adultos

Those who are lost
Look to the stars to lead them home.
The flag of Somalia, our home,
Has one star,
One background
But we are not one star
We are millions
Not one background
But millions.
