Thank you so much to Wattpad Books and the author for providing me with a free copy of “Dirty Lying Faeries” by Sabrina Blackburry in exchange for an honest review. All of the following opinions are formulated on my own. Any quotes in this review should be cross-referenced with the final copy for any possible edits.
Did you like... This is for you!
- Elfin by Quinn Loftis
- Switched by Amanda Hocking
- Any of those other fairy books published around 2010?!
Overall rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars
My favorite elements: First, we all know that cover and title lured me in like a bug to a light. I read too many fairy books, we all know it. If it's a fairy book, I will be reading it. End of story. With that, this is a very basic fairy book therefore I am pleased. We see adult changelings which is an element often not incldued in fairy books anymore. It's a good read if you are looking for something mindless.
My criticisms: This book is published by Wattpad wish earns an automatic warning flag for it's reputation. The plot was predictable. I felt like I'd read the story a hundred times before. There are even a few books I am thinking of from when I was younger to compare this book to. The writing was juvenile for the adult content... As expected from Wattpad.
Will I finish the series? I'm not sure if I will remember this book well enough to notice when the second book comes out. Time will tell!
Important Elements
- Mysterious Love Interest
- Journey to Fairy
- Court Politics and Intrigue
- Forced Proximity
- Humans vs. Fae

For a long while I've been looking for a book that would take me into the Faerie world by introducing it from the real world first, and then I laid eyes on this in the bookstore and it was too perfect to pass up! This book was perfect for what I needed! It taught me so much that I feel comfortable enough to read some faerie fantasy books set only in a faerie world now.
Focusing on the story:
Ugh I loved this book so much, there was a point where I was like alright I'm gonna need some more romance to keep me going and the next chapter did just that! And the lighthearted aspects of the book were such a new balance between the mystery and the fun of the book.
So glad I bought this book! Off to read the next one!

I wanted to like this sooo bad.
My main problem is the writing. Wow, it was bad. It was constantly breaking immersion for me. I'm not trying to hate, and I have huge respect for anyone who writes a book. I'm sure a lot of people loved this story. However in my opinion it could have used a lot of work.
It's hard to describe exactly what I didn't like, but I'll try my best. Every interaction just seemed like something that would never happen. People just don't talk to eachother the way they do in this story. It was very forced and robotic. Characters were constantly contradicting things they said all throughout the plot. A major example of that is near the end when the 'ban' changelings because 'it's inhumane and it's just the worst thing anyone can do' or something like that, but then basically two pages later she lives happily ever after because the change was the best thing that ever happened to her. There were events like that throughout the entire story.
Here is a list of other things that bothered me in a random order:
The visit to her family was completely unnecessary and she doesn't think about them again after the visit, for the rest of the book.
Her friend Candice only mattered when it was convenient to the plot.
Why did Thea try so badly to not join Devins house? Yeah yeah he lied or whatever but so what...? They didn't even know eachother. She was clearly supposed to be in the winter court and she knew it. And speaking of that, why even go through this choosing ceremony to begin with if they all know what house the changeling is supposed to end up in and won't accept them to any other house? Nonsense.
Was Alan supposed to be set up as a love triangle? Because half the time it seemed like he was at the same time they were both mated or whatever. So it just made their relationship uncomfortable.
I only finished thib book because I purchased a hard copy. I kinda wish I hadn't.

The pacing was off. The first half of the book was excellent. The second half became pure chaos. Also, where was the spice?! Where was the relationship building? And come on, the pregnancy trope? No.

A really fun read! Nothing revolutionary or wildly emotional but I enjoyed it nonetheless. It felt like twilight with fae, which is not a complaint -just an observation and maybe something to keep in mind. The last 20% felt a little rushed and there was less spice than expected. A fun, easy fantasy read to get me out of my slump.
Graphic: Body horror
Moderate: Sexual content
Minor: Pregnancy
