There's not much more I can say about this book that hasn't already been said, so I won't go into a major review. It's brilliant. It makes you think. It makes you feel selfish. It makes you cry. It makes you want to seek out more information about Afghanistan. It makes you realize how lucky you are to never have lived in a war-torn country. It makes you sad for humanity. It makes you angry with humanity. It makes you view things from the other side. It makes you want to rescue every child ever. Now excuse me while I find some ice cream and cartoons to help me feel normal again.

One of my favorite books. Learned so much about Afghanistan too but the story still stays with me.

“Who the hell cared about another dead Afghan kid?”

i’ve put off reading this book for months because i’ve been warned that it would break my heart. writing this review, three hours before i’m meant to wake up and get ready for my grandmother’s funeral, i have to say that i disagree. of course, it has broken my heart a little bit, but it has made me to feel more than than i have allowed myself to in a long time. in this book, i have felt the suffering of an entire nation, and yet it does not feel enough. i know that i will feel this way for a few days and then move on with my life, but i hope i will carry a small part of this book with me. to be reminded of the suffering that we ignore every day.

'That was a long time ago, but it's wrong what they say about the past, I've learned, about how you can bury it. Because the past claws its way out.'

'You can't love a person who lives that way without fearing him too.'

"Children aren't coloring books. You don't get to fill them with your favorite colors."

'When I was older, I read in my poetry books that yelda was the starless night tormented lovers kept vigil, enduring the endless dark, waiting for the sun to rise and bring with it their loved one.'

"And sometimes the dead are luckier,"

"'The desert weed lives on, but the flower of spring blooms and wilts.' Such grace, such dignity, such tragedy."

I loved so much about this. The language was beautiful and poetic, and the story was moving. Truly one of those books that will stay with you. A must-read.
