This is such a wonderful story. I’m really glad I picked this up. I loved the murder-mystery aspect mixed with fantasy. The characters are well developed, especially our thief. I was a little confused by the German names and titles of the characters. I listened to the English audiobook and first thought Margaret Owen is German and I’m listening to a translation, which would have been a little ridiculous. But I think it’s just the names? I looked her up and on her website it says she’s American. If you aren’t German you won’t notice that, it’ll be just silly sounding long names (they were in German aswell, just if you wanted to know 😄).

i admit! vanja and emeric got to me! im not usually a romance person and this book isnt a romance but vanya and emeric were so engrossing and so fun to read.
i enjoyed the pacing and am fascinated by the world building and the low gods. also i love scheming and plotting and cleverness. i really liked this book.
my one ~issue~ is that the last few chapters were good and i burned through them but based on the narration you know everything will be fine, its a bit cheeky and addresses the reader in sort of a jokey conspiratorial way that spoils the drama a bit.
i wasnt really aware of this book being a YA until after i finished the book but that makes a lot of sense given how the ending was written (and epilogue and the entire book really) and that vanya is 16.

This book was a ride. What I thought would be a simple retelling was actually a full experience. I loved the writing style. It was immersive and intrigued me to keep reading. I couldn't put this book down. Some chapters felt a bit long for what was happening. I don't want to include chapter spoilers in this review so I won't explain in dept. But these chapters were mostly worldbuilding, describing what was happening etc. I felt like these chapters slowed down the story a bit. Nonetheless, they are a big reason as to why the story was immersive.
Vanja is a great main character. Intricate, cunning, vulnerable and actuallya softy (in my humble opinion) . The way that her different 'personas' were described and handled made it truly seem like they were different people. I loved reading about who she trul felt while being those people. I loved Emeric. He's both similar and the complete opposite of Vanja. There interactions were a lot of fun to read. He really brought out Vanja's soft side.
Overall a solid plot, good characters and even better twists.
