Reading this book, you can't help but wish that you lived in Panama. The traditions the author details about the towns events just make you want to live there. It's like a rural paradise - which fits my own backwoodsy family and instincts. Based on the books I've read by her, I've decided that Barbara Delinsky is, overall, a "grandma writer." That may be because my grandma loves her, or it may be because, in her photo, she is wearing those white grandma shoes. You know the ones. Regardless, Delinsky created a great setting, but has underdeveloped characters and issues once again. For most of the book, there was really no conflict. And, the ending was so predictable that I skipped several chapters just to reach it so I could be finished. At times, it was just too slow because you knew exactly where it was going. The ending was heart-rending, but it failed to address specific issues with other characters. I won't spoil it. There are lots of details in here about the relationship between Bree and Tom and their intimacy...I feel weird now that my grandma has read it and recommended it to me. Grandma and I are going to have to sit down and talk about what's appropriate for her to read :)

The writing was quite engaging, although I noticed that more at the beginning than later. (Either I got used to it or it didn't stay that way.) The overall story didn't really work for me. Also, Aaron and Ollie really got screwed, however they felt in the end. :(

I've searched a lot for it and now it's within my grasp - I should have known. When you can't find it it isn't because it's a freaking bestseller.

The story was cute, the idea, so far, original, but the writing... She could have explored the theme a little more - much more. And she fell in love... oh, so quick. I don't know...

If Viola were real maybe it could have happened, but she sometimes makes Twilight's Bella seem a dazzling overflow of personality.

Interesting premise. A bit too 'teen angsty' for my taste, though. The ending was good, although I did not find it entirely satisfactory. Over all. . .I wouldn't bother reading it again.

This is a beautiful book about love and growth. It's so sweet it'll make your teeth rot. If you're looking for a book to sit down with that will make you laugh, cry, and leave you with a warm feeling then this is the one.

Head to my blog at http://www.happybookloversblog.com

I've had this book forever, and this week when I was picking out what I was going to read, it was sitting on the top of my "A" pile. (Yes, I have all my books alphabetized.) So I grabbed it, and sure enough, I finished it that night. This book was so cute.

Jinn appears to Viola (he's a jinn, which is essentially a genie, but she calls him Jinn because she's weirded out that he doesn't have a name) because she's desperate to feel like she belongs. Which, okay, I get, but I don't get how she can be wishing so badly that she conjures a jinn because she's got her whole life ahead of her, but that's okay. The book got so good I ended up not caring.

She's an artist, and she struggles with painting for passion, and as the book develops and she becomes better friends with Jinn, she begins to develop that skill to do so. It was great watching Viola grow as a character. Of course, at first, she thinks she wants to be popular and have the boy and hang with all the cool kids in school. The interesting spin was that Jinn didn't have to deal with this old version of Viola on his own — he befriended her best friend and former boyfriend, Lawrence (who was actually gay, but it still hit Viola hard). I really enjoyed the friendship between Jinn and Lawrence, it made this book more than just a cutesy fluff book, it added some actual dimensions to the characters.

As far as the plot, yes, it was extremely predictable. But this book was SO FREAKING CUTE I didn't care. None of the predictability actually mattered because I was just so in love with the premise and Jinn and Lawrence. Definitely a super fun summery read.

Really, really sweet. The kind of book that makes me all smiley-faced after reading. I'm just a sucker for romance.

I do have to comment that I don't feel that the characters were really that fleshed out. The minor characters felt too much like props to the main story. Maybe it was the length? The whole story felt a bit rushed and too much for me to imagine as real, even in a book sense.

(The rating's mostly how I felt immediately after reading. It might change.)

Exactly what you expect it to be. Adorable yet cringeworthy.
