Batman Vol. 3: I Am Bane, by Tom King

Issues 16-20 "I am Bane" |5/5|: This arc is extremely good, after Batman attacked Prisca's, Bane is looking forward to destroy him, he goes to Gotham and wants to take home the Psycho Pirate (who's been forced to cure Gotham Girl), Bane goes crazy so he attacks Arkham and destroy every prisoner, then he gets into an epic fight with Batman as flashbacks are being shown.

Issue 24: A prelude to Batman and Catwoman's marriage?

Issue 23: A brief crossover with The Swamp thing, meh.

I've been enjoying Tom King's run on Batman but I feel with this arc the cracks are starting to show. King seems to be using the same handful of tricks over and over. There's still plenty to like, especially the stellar artwork by David Finch, and the repetitiveness of King's writing isn't enough to make me quit the book, I just hope this is something corrected in the following entries.

Oh, Bruce. You get mean and ridiculous when a Robin dies.

The scene in the burger joint gets 4 Stars because I love the former Robin relationships. But the rest of it was pretty boring.

There was a lot of missing bits that could have made this volume much better. Like Dick, Jason, and Damian going after Bane (and how they reacted to waking up in the Fortress of Solitude) or some build up around the big thing with Catwoman (or some resolution to the big thing with Catwoman). Instead, we get long drawn out poetry recitation and lots of “I am Bane!” “I am Batman!”

It felt like this volume was trying to capitalize on emotion that had been building over the course of the series, but the emotion hasn’t been there... so it was pretty much a fail.

Highlight Reel:
Dick, Jason, and Damian:
Batman (2016) issue 16 The bat boys at Batburger
Batman (2016) Issue #16 - Read Batman (2016) Issue #16 comic online in high quality
Batman (2016) issue 16
This perfectly depicts Bruce and Alfred's relationship:

I’m still far from impressed, but at least this one took an interesting turn at the end and showcased some actual characterization instead of empty cliches. I also love seeing Swamp Thing in any context, so the final story was a great way to end things.

Not quite as strong of an arc in this volume as the previous two, but still well worth picking up. King has such a solid grasp of the Bat Family and the assorted villains that this title is still a great read even with a weaker plot. Looking forward to seeing how he handles the new complication sprung into Bruce's/Batman's life at the end.
