I love YNAB as a software despite its initial steep learning curve & this book is the perfect companion.

Really enlightening to hear Jesse’s story and the origin story of YNAB as well as relevant case studies. This is a kind, realistic view into the power of budgeting.

My biggest takeaway - create a budget based on my life, not the other way around.

Solid advice without being patronizing or preachy. He really doesn't tell you what you should be spending your money on. He's all about managing your money (budgeting!) so that you can spend it on things you want and not end up wasting it on non-priorities/things you don't care about.
Of course he plugs his budgeting tool lots, but that's expected and easy to ignore.
The first half of the book is about budgeting and his Four Rules. The other half is about budgeting with your SO, teaching your kids about budgeting, and a focus on debt.

Had to return to library. Will try again another time. Too many other books in rotation and not enough time to read lately.

This budget book has some interesting ideas, almost all of which I think I agree with. I have been trying out some of the ideas mentioned in the book for about a month and it does seem to be making a positive difference in how I think about money. I think I may try out the software he has created as well. You do not have to do so to find help in this book though and he mentions that several times. The basic tenant in this system is to "give every dollar a job" which sounds simple but does help you think about the balance in your bank account in a different way. I recommend this to people who need to get a handle on their money but don't want a super restrictive budget or to people who have tried other systems and failed.
