A well written history of Existentialism as a philosophy. The introduction is written to clarify why these famous philosophers may be called existentialists. The translations of their texts are well-done, and provide the reasons to call each philosopher an existentialist. A good introduction to existentialism.

This selection provides a good general overview of existentialism and it's various themes. I picked this book up as a teenager and I've been interested in the topic ever since.

This was my first time reading passages from most of these existentialists. Some of them were hard to understand, but overall, the selection of writings provided a well thought out summary of existentialism. I liked the intros the editor provided, and I wouldn't have minded reading more from him and hearing his explanation of the importance of each piece. A great book! Reading it has tempted me to read more from these thinkers.

I figured this would be a challenging read, and I was not mistaken. Took me an entire month to work my way through it. It's not entirely up my alley (Kierkegaard and Heidegger were especially rough), but as someone who isn't intimately familiar with philosophy, I appreciate the perspective it provided.

And while I have no way of knowing whether the included authors/essays/etc. were an appropriately illustrative cross-section of existentialism, it certainly felt sufficient to a novice such as myself. If you're looking to explore existentialism, I'm sure you could do a lot worse than this.

I only read the introductory essay because I plan to go on to read the other existentialist works anyway (already started Notes From Underground). I found the essay to be very useful in explaining and comparing the different existentialists - although of course, through the perspective of Walter Kaufmann's interpretations of the different works. He paints a vivid image of the different personalities of each philosopher and I can't help being curious to see if and how my own view of them differs.
