So much fun! Having watched "Sherlock" with Mr. Cumberbatch and "Elementary", it was great to finally read the source, and see how Conan Doyle described his quirky, brilliant sleuth.

I wanted to read these stories as I've become a fan of the BBC Sherlock series. It increased my love of the television series with respect to how much of the source material actually made it in there. The stories themselves were fun and entertaining to read despite the historical context. This volume included A Study in Scarlet, The Sign of Four, Adventures of Sherlock Holmes (collected short stories), Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes (collected short stories), and The Hound of the Baskervilles.

If I remember correctly (it's taken me years to get through this), this volume contains three novellas (A Study in Scarlet, The Sign of Four, and The Hound of the Baskervilles), and the rest are 14-ish-page short stories. The first two novellas are a bit overlong and messy; the short stories are entertaining but mostly consist of a bunch of talking. The Hound of the Baskervilles, though, is everything you want a Sherlock Holmes story to be; it's the best by far, with mystery, adventure, suspense, and character. And who doesn't love Holmes and Dr. Watson?

I have been reading this book for years. YEARS. I love these short stories so, so much. I never wanted them to end, but I was super eager to finally read every Sherlock Holmes story (at least from this volume, as I believe I still have 6 more to go), and I knew The Hound of the Baskervilles was going to be marvelous. And, of course, it was. This book means so much to me and these stories will forever be my favorites. And naturally I can always go back and enjoy them over and over again.

This collection includes:

A Scandal in Bohemia
The Red-Headed League
A Case of Identity
The Boscombe Valley Mystery
The Five Orange Pips
The Adventure of the Engineers's Thumb

I probably would have enjoyed the collection much more if I had not started with such high expectations of Sherlock Holmes and the work of Arthur Conan Doyle - although my only basis for my expectations were from watching the T.V. show Sherlock. Due to high recommendations from other readers for these stories, I will give Doyle another chance - but it probably will not be with the collections. They were very simply written, and better suited for reading to a child. I had hoped for something more involved.

That being said, these would be great to read to a mystery-loving child, except perhaps the last story (as it involved the amputation of a thumb). For those concerned about drug use, cocaine is only mentioned a few times, generally in passing.
