I enjoyed the first half-and-something of the book, then the magic was gone. Not sure if because of my changed mindset or the other half was really less entertaining.

Ach Stravaganza, wie habe ich dich in der sechsten Klasse geliebt, das ganze erste Kapitel hätte ich förmlich mitsprechen können, selbst nach über zehn Jahren noch! Stadt der Masken habe ich tatsächlich nur ein oder zwei Mal gelesen und keine größere Erinnerung daran, aber Stadt der Sterne! Ja, Stadt der Sterne habe ich etliche Male gelesen, unter anderem in einem sehr verregneten Irland-Urlaub. Ich habe also entsprechend viel Nostalgie für diesen Roman und ich würde lügen, wenn ich sagen würde, dass das meine Bewertung nicht in irgendeiner Hinsicht beeinflussen würde.
Ich muss gestehen, auch wenn ich inzwischen nicht mehr die Zielgruppe bin: Stravaganza hat eine Prämisse, die interessant genug ist, um originell zu sein, ohne so abgespaced zu sein, dass man nur noch mit den Augen rollen will, was mir in der Zwischenzeit mit vielen YA Romanen so gegangen ist. Kurzum: Zeitreise, Alternatives Universum, Italien-esque in der Renaissance bis frühen Neuzeit ist recht unterhaltsam und entzieht sich geschickt den „das ist ja historischen inakkurat!“ Kritiken, da es sich schließlich nicht um ein echtes Land handelt. Die Figuren sind alle nicht allzu tiefgründig, aber liebenswert und doch unterschiedlich genug charakterisiert, dass man sie alle unterscheiden kann. Georgia mochte ich als Kind schon und glücklicherweise ist das immer noch der Fall. Ich muss zugeben, dass es keinen Charakter gibt, den ich wirklich gar nicht leiden kann. Selbst die stereotypischen ‚Bösewichte‘ sind für dieses Genre erstaunlich komplex. So ist Niccolo di Chimici zwar manipulativ und ehrgeizig, jedoch im Bestreben die Machtposition seiner Familie zu sichern und mit einer überraschend warmherzigen Liebe seinen Kindern gegenüber. Der ‚böse Spion‘ begleicht seine Schulden und der ‚böse Stiefbruder‘ gibt letztendlich Georgias Talisman zurück. Ich schätze diese vermenschlichenden Seiten sehr.
Kritikpunkte sind höchstens, dass die Mitte des Buches etwas schleppt, das Volk der Manoush, das auf der Kultur der Roma und Sinti beruht zwar immerhin nicht villifiziert, aber durchaus romantisiert und exotisiert dargestellt wird, was mir etwas negativ aufgefallen ist. Allerdings kann ich insgesamt sagen, was mich sehr freut: It overall holds up, nice!

I'm doing a reread of Mary Hoffman's Stravaganza series, which I originally read in 2005 (the first 3 books) and 2012 (the second 3 books). City of Stars is one of my favorites, because I love the astrology infused into the book. Central to the plot is the city in which it takes place, which is divided into 12, with each "Twelfth" corresponding to a particular zodiac sign. Alliances in the city follow the elements of the signs, in addition to the city-states that they are aligned with. As per usual in the Stravaganza series, Mary Hoffman uses historical data to inform her worldbuilding; the city of Giglia in the book corresponds with our real-world Siena, and the Stellata horse race is based on the Palio di Siena. The plot is easy to follow and incorporates many side storylines that address tough topics (bullying, suicide, disability) without overdramatizing them.
Main character is 100% a horse girl, with all the horse girl tropes (awkward, boyish, bullied, and then basically hits puberty and becomes attractive), so you have been forewarned ;)

I read the first book in this series in middle school and enjoyed it so when I saw this at a used book sale I figured why not. It was a good easy and fairly quick read. And even though I’m much older than when I read the first book I still enjoyed it and will probably try to find the rest of the books in this series somewhere.

Re-reading my childhood books. Really nice reading experience but falls bit short from the emotional end and has bunch of show don't tell. The main character doesn't really do much and the book would have gained a lot for having a stronger mc with more agency. The overall story and plot was fun and heartfelt in some places but this bookseries' magic system def needed some more work than just abstract "strong mysterious powers" and travel between worlds.
