SUMMARY: (SPOILER WARNING)

Curran has to head out on a journey to visit a small shifter group run by Gene. While he’s gone, Kate will have to attend the monthly Conclave meeting with The People without him. What could possibly go wrong?

Well, everything! During the meeting, Hugh shows up with a murdered Master of the Dead and claims that one of the Pack killed him. He gives Kate until noon the next day to bring them the murderer or it’s all out war.

Kate goes with Robert, Desandra, and Derek, (while Ascanio unwittingly tags along) to get some intel from one of Robert’s scouts who may have seen the victim before he was killed.

On their journey they encounter several monsters and face several battles that are both by happenstance and some orchestrated by Hugh. They also visit the witches to receive an ominous vision of the future for Atlanta.

When they finally find the murderer and turn them over to the cops instead of The People, Hugh becomes enraged and captures Kate in Roland’s prison tower known as Mishmar.

Once Curran and company rescues Kate, she finally faces off against her father, and it doesn’t go quite as expected.

REVIEW:

I am so utterly disappointed by this book. I’m sorry, but this was so lame! I actually think that this is my least favorite book in the series. I think I even liked the first book in the series better, which is pretty bad.

The first issue is that Curran isn’t part of the story until 68% into the book! He shows up at the beginning and then goes off on his trip and is gone for the majority of the book.

Other favorite characters are also absent. Samain, Grendel, Julie, Raphael. And others. So many favorites didn’t even make an appearance or were only given a small amount of page time. So disappointing!

That’s not to say I disliked the characters that were apart of the book.

I actually really loved Desandra in this book. She proves to be a really strong and loyal character and I liked her a lot.

Ascanio is great too. Love that little guy. He’s such a punk but full of heart. He’s also hilarious, especially his banter with Derek. These two were hilarious together.

And of course I was happy that Derek got a lot of good page time. Jim got some good page time in too, which was nice.

But still so many characters were missing or only minimally included and it made me sad. I much prefer the books where the whole regular crew bands together in a mission.

The second issue is that the book is very slow paced and kind of dull. There are lots of mini battles that her small group faces around town, but never a really big epic battle in this one. At least not compared to the epic battles from the previous books.

Which brings me to the big bad. Well, there’s Hugh and also (by extension) Roland. What a disappointment!

Hugh was a fabulous foe at the start, but by the end he is quickly taken down a peg by Roland and it made his whole posturing for the entire book seem rather deflated and pointless.

Then Kate meets Roland and….he wants a relationship with her. Yep. He doesn’t seem want to kill her or anything, just get to know her. All these books she has been running and preparing to face Roland in battle…and for what? Seriously? I can’t say I’m surprised given the history we have heard of Roland. I suspected he might just be curious about her more than anything. But it’s still rather anticlimactic the way it all turned out.

And then the end was the cherry on top of the shit pie. Kate and Curran leave the Pack and move to a house in the suburbs. Really? No…seriously? They’re just like…done with the Pack? No more Beast Lord or Consort. Yep.

Umm…so yeah I can’t say I liked this one. The only thing I enjoyed about it was the characters we did get (Ascanio and Derek moments were the best). And I also liked the whole scene where they are going through the rooms in the Mishmar tower, which was pretty cool.

Other than those couple things I’m really disappointed by this book. I’m glad this isn’t the last book because that would be really sad. I don’t know what direction the next books are going to go in, but hopefully it will wrap things up better than this.

Just when you think a series can't get any better, whoopa-dee-doo! You're proved wrong. The series just hells getting better and better. <3!
I love it! The next part is definitely that there isn't a damn cliff hanger. I would recommend this to anybody. The humour infused in this is just amazing.

Five stars!!!

I have thoughts on this one, mostly good. It was definitely a game changer of a book, very dramatic and enjoyable, but definitely heart wrenching at times.
SpoilerRIP Mauro.
Meeting Roland threw me a bit - I knew it would happen from reading other people's reviews, but it was pretty intense. I can't wait to see where the plot develops from here!

In this book, Kate is tested a whole lot, but she gets through it and I'm proud of her. On a side note: I absolutely love
SpoilerSerrat! It cracked me up seeing people wig out when Kate said that it was made from her grandmother's bones.

It was interesting to get to know Ghastek a bit better. Kate and Curran are great - I love them together even if I have mixed feelings on Curran individually. Andrea is a good best friend. Barabas is my new favorite side character (and I feel like we haven't seen much of Derek lately?), and Desaranda annoys me a bit. I like Robert and Thomas.

Overall, I definitely had a fun time reading this, even though I'm mad that
SpoilerHugh
didn't die, the bastard. As I said at the start of this review, I can't wait to see what happens next! 4.5 stars.

I love this series. I enjoyed this one more than the last one? The last few books seem to be missing some spark the first ones had. But there is more maturity and character growth in the later ones.

When all said and done, I'm still going to drive into the next one. And I'm going to end up rereading the whole series when I have to wait for the newest publication.

This series never fails to amaze me. It can do no wrong in my eyes. The action, the excitement, the witty comments and danger around every corner! I always get so sad coming to the end of the book, because it means the story is over for another year. BUT - there are always re-reads!

I can't believe how this one panned out. It was just so epic and the ending wasn't what I was expecting. I'm super excited to see what happens next. I have so many questions about everything

(cryptic review, because anything more specific would spoil things - at least for now. I just can't wrap my head around it all for a 'safe' review!)

I think Kate being with Ghastek in the shaft together was one of the best moments in the series.

This was a really good "end" to that particular storyline, of waiting for Kate to finally confront her father. It's obviously not the real end, because there's several books to go in the series. But still, it was a really exciting read. I love seeing Kate come into her own. I was shocked but not shocked by the end of the book. It's going to be interesting seeing how the next book works based on that change.

It's been some time since I read book 6, which I believe is a good thing.
I quite liked this book, and I felt like Kate and Curran had grown as a couple, but thinking about book 6 leaves me angry. Curran should not have gotten away with what he did so easily.
Kate is awesome here. She is strong, but still depend on and trust her companions.

The ending was honestly the only way I believed that this could end, so I was not particularly surprised, but the execution was nice.

(and wow, these covers are so exceptionally bad that I'm starting to love them)
