Enjoyable mystery but problematic portrayal of women. Great narration by Samuel West.

This book confused the hell out of me. I had absolutely no idea what was going on for about 3/4 of the story. I liked the way it all shook out, but it made me feel dumb while I was reading it. I'm looking forward to seeing how the relationship between Morse & Lewis continues to develop.

A year or so ago I stumbled upon The Way Through the Woods. I had enjoyed it well enough. Having recently moved to Europe, I thought I would be able to connect more with the British narrative, and to be honest, I was missing some good ol' murder.

As most other readers have mentioned in the reviews, the perspective towards women came as a shock to me. However, the plot of the mystery itself was really interesting and kept toying with me. I would like to say I thoroughly enjoyed reading the book (in one day), but for the denouement. It just did not make sense to me at all. There were too many loose ends left, about the murderer and regarding certain events that occurred during the investigation. Hence my rating.

I really like the Inspector Lewis show on Masterpiece Mystery. I have never watched Inspector Morse so I thought I would try the books. I thoroughly enjoyed the mystery, and like most British mystery shows and books, the villain came right out of left field! Just the way I like them! However, it is a bit dated and the views on rape were very hard to read/listen too from the main character. I did like it enough to want to pick up the next one! Fans of the Masterpiece Mystery shows might want to pick this up. I had not preconceptions of Morse, but did hear Kevin Whately's voice in my head as Lewis spoke!

Unbearable. I would say “aged terribly” but it read like a book written long before the 1975 it was published. Couldn’t finish it. Going to read something written by a woman now.
