Phryne Fisher has had her sister descend on her and treat her badly, now she's trying to entertain everyone, so they go to Luna Park to amusements, during a Ghost Train Phryne finds a corpse, disguised, mummified but with a bullet hole. While she starts poking in it, her life, and the life of her household becomes threatened. This doesn't put her off but makes her more determined to investigate.
Meanwhile her lover, Lin Chung, is investigating a feud between his family and another Chinese family and finding a mystery that he too has to investigate, both mysteries eventually lead to the same place, Castlemaine.
The relationships are interesting and she is so easily smart, but the ending felt anti-climactic.

Lin Chung was almost a deuteragonist in this one, and it was lovely to have him.

Been a while since I read Miss Fisher mystery and this feels a bit stronger than some of the previous ones

Every part of the story seemed to work together and it was heavy on the Lin Chung which of course makes me happy, and I eventually developed a fondness for Phryne's sister, too. The deranged murderer at least did not come out of the blue this time, plus the historical mystery of the gold was quite satisfying.

A 70 year old murder and a case of missing gold couriers. This Phyrne Fisher mystery focuses on the gold rush era of Australia (A period of history that I don't know much bout tbf). I found the historical details fascinating and appreciated the greater look we got into Lin Chung's family and character.
