Beautiful, raw, mystical, haunting writing about one of the darkest, most brutal chapters of American history - wrapped around a love story.
I lost my way at times..... despite my love for a multi-narrator novel, this got a bit hard for me to get straight (no pun intended) in my head..... as a result it took me 6 weeks to read. My fault, not the book's - in a more competent, better educated reader's hands this is a 5-star reading experience.

I'm giving this 2 stars because I really loved the idea of the story - following the endangered love of two enslaved men - but I could not get into this book. I think what I read is just the tip of the iceberg but there is some really graphic violence in this book that I just couldn't read. I enjoyed the perspectives of the main characters but there are so many other POVs that we read that hardly any of the book is actually dedicated to them. There are also random bible verses thrown in, which didn't really work for me either.

A hard 4 stars…a love story with a taste of revenge during American slavery??

Great writing beautiful writing but could’ve stopped and chopped a few 20-30 pages.

Whew I mean shoutouts to Robert Jones Jr a fellow Brooklyn College alumni, definitely the Son of Baldwin and Morrison but it was lot of colorful descriptions and verbiage to read through.

I was really excited to read this but was a little underwhelmed. It was a very slow read and hard to follow at times. Beautifully written and definitely easier to read by the last third

This book is beautiful, poetic, important and challenging, it’s a book that isn’t always easy to read, due to the subject, but I think when it comes to black history and slavery, we should be uncomfortable and look at things that are difficult, that are unsettling, especially when white, because that’s our history too and we must learn from it.

The writing was sometimes too big for me, if that makes sense, I would have to re-read paragraphs to try and digest them, the prose and religious elements so grand that I had to look again, but that could be more me than the book. I am glad I read The Prophets, I’m glad I knew these characters, that I felt their love for one another, and I still can’t stop thinking about it.

This was beautifully written but very sad.  I think I’ll eventually revisit when I’m in a better headspace.

It was a DNF for me. The writing was very difficult to follow. While I enjoyed certain parts, I could not finish.

*4.25* So moving and affecting and an important story about queer love in the time of slavery. The perspective/narrator shifting was unique and helped tell a richer story. The lyrical nature of the story was sometimes a bit overwhelming, hence the non-perfect rating. Otherwise brilliant!
