This was an enjoyable book on a history I was familiar with. I think there are better books such as The Book Woman, that have a more in depth presentation of the people and challenges in the Appalachian Mountains.

I’m a huge JM fan, but this one took me forever to get through. Although I loved the setting and the “idea” of this book I just had a hard time identifying with the characters, as others have said. It just fell kind of flat for me, and felt too long and drawn out at times. I didn’t really get into it about the last 100 pages....

An easy 5 stars.

Loved the setting, and every character had my heart. The way these ladies come together made my heart so full, this is what true friendship looks like.

There were points where I thought it would get a bit slow, but just as I was thinking this it picked back up right away!

Also highly recommend the audiobook, there were points when the English accent would slip a bit but it wasn’t too offensive.

Great story

Amazing story about a little known area of history. It highlights the difficulties of women, race, and economic status. A true story of friendship!

" There is always a way out of a situation. Might be ugly. Might leave you feeling like the earth had gone and shifted under your feet. But there is always a way around. "

This tale of The Packhorse Librarians of Kentucky was a very engaging and intriguing story. Our two main characters Alice and Margery swiftly become friends despite how different they are. We hear about the journey these librarians take in order to deliver library materials for the country folks of Kentucky.

We learn about the culture of Kentucky as well as the general laws and treatment of women during this time period. The town drunk is found dead and one of our Librarians is accessed of killing him. We get to go through the trial and it really brings to light to mistreatment of women and how men made all the decisions. Overall this was a very good read.
